Correlation: Alcoholism vs. age .29 .01

There is no significant difference in the civil status of alcoholics, excessive drinkers, and abstainers, with married men predominating in all three groups. A higher percentage of moderate drinkers are unmarried, reflecting the predominance of young men in this group (Table 8:2).

What causes alcoholism in the village? As many studies have shown, it is not possible to pick out a single trait which invariably causes alcoholism. Rather, as Jellinek (1960) suggested, there are “vulnerabilities,” social and psychological, that increase the likelihood of excessive drinking. These factors have, however, different weight within different cultures. In extreme cases one factor may be so weighty that even a very small vulnerability in another factor will tend to produce alcoholism. Vulnerability in the village, as in other societies, is a combination of cultural, psychological, and socioeconomic factors.
